Check out our image resizing article here! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Over the years we have found that most customers aren’t aware they can view their images at actual print size in photoshop and if they are, they aren’t doing it properly so that’s the basis for today’s post.

  1. There are a few steps to calibrating Photoshop properly so that the view you see when going to View — Print Size is the actual print size.
  2. The Big Problem – Photoshop Doesn’t Know Your Screen Resolution If you simply go to View — Print Size it’s going to show you the image zoomed in to your print size, but based on the default screen resolution within Photoshop of 72 ppi.

You will need to find out what your screen resolution is and make the change in the Photoshop settings which we’ll get to in a bit. Sample Image Showing Print Size of 9×3.5″ at Screen Resolution of 72 PPI, Notice how small it is and you’ll find in this case it actually zooms out rather than in. Sample Image Showing Print Size of 9×3.5″ at Correct Screen Resolution of 128 PPI, Your screen resolution may differ from mine but most will most likely be in the 120-130 range. Below is a screenshot of Photoshop previewing the image at actual print size correctly. So there you have it! You can see what a big difference it makes when Photoshop isn’t properly calibrated to view at print size. Determine Your Screen Resolution And Fix It 1. Measure your laptop/pc screen horizontally in inches, Just the screen itself. For example, on my Macbook Air the horizontal measurement is 11.25″ across. 2. Make sure monitor is in native resolution. On most PC’s you can right click on the desktop to get to display settings and on the Mac you can go to Apple Icon (upper left) — About This Mac — More Info. This will display your screen resolution in pixels (image 1). 3. Now do the math. Now that you know the length of your screen horizontally in inches (in this case 11.25″) and the number of pixels horizontally (always first number in pixel dimension so in this case 1440) to determine your screen PPI or pixels per inch.

So divide 1440 pixels / 11.25 inches = 128 pixels/inch (PPI).4. Update PPI setting in Photoshop, Heading down the home stretch here, Find your “Units & Rulers” section. Depending on your version and whether you’re on a PC or Mac it will either be under Photoshop – Preferences or Edit – Preferences. You will see the screen below or something very similar.

Next to “Screen Resolution” simply put in the PPI you just calculated for your monitor which in my case was 128. Hit save and you’re done! 4. Open a photo in Photoshop if you don’t already have one there.5. Change your print size and view at print size, To view the current print size and/or change it just go to Image — Image Size and make sure it’s in inches as shown in the below screenshot. 6. Verify everything is correct. If you don’t see the Ruler at the top, enable it by going to View – Rulers and selecting it. If everything is setup properly (and you are viewing at print size), the ruler you have there in photoshop should represent a real inch. 7. Generally speaking how large can I print? That’s a question we get several times a day and it’s not an easy answer since there are quite a few variables involved, the most important being the quality of the camera. It’s also important to know that artificially resizing an image in Photoshop will not improve print quality much if at all (at least not that the eye can see).

What matters are the native pixels off the camera. Taking this image as an example and assuming the native pixel dimension is 2722×1102 (which it is), we’ll start viewing the print at 100 PPI to see how it looks. So in this case about 27×11″. It was taken with a quality camera and I see it looks really good at 27×11″ so I’ll go another 5″ or so to 32×13″ and it still looks real sharp at 85 PPI.

This is typically about where we might see resolution issues even with quality cameras. However, this particular image enlarges really well and can be printed at high quality at 37 – 40″ even though PPI is quite low around 70. Here is a screenshot showing a portion of the image at 40×16. 8. Don’t degrade your images – edit as RAW or TIFF, Be sure to do all your editing as RAW or TIFF and only make a final save as a JPEG. JPEG’s are great because they’re easier to move around (much smaller file = faster upload to us!) and there is no visible loss in quality when printing.

Are canvas size and image size the same?

Image Size versus Canvas Size Today’s Question: I was wondering if you could explain the differences in Photoshop of canvas size and image size. I am confused as to their differences especially when printing. For example I would like to print as an 8×10 on 11.5 x 8.5 with an even white border all around.

Is that possible? Tim’s Quick Answer: Both the Image Size and Canvas Size commands in Photoshop allow you to change the overall dimensions of an image, but they operate in different ways. I think the best way to understand each of these commands is to consider when you would use each of them. The Image Size command is used when you want to change the size of an image, such as to print at a different size than the native pixel dimensions of the image.

The Canvas Size command is used for adding space around a photo or essentially cropping the image by reducing the available space. More Detail: For example, let’s assume you have an image that is currently sized at 8-inches by 12-inches at 300 pixels per inch (2,400 by 3,600 pixels).

  1. If you want to print that image at 20-inches by 30-inches, you need to change the pixel dimensions of the actual image.
  2. In other words, the image needs to be “stretched” to contain 6,000 by 9,000 pixels.
  3. In the process, pixel values need to be calculated for all of the “in between” pixels that are created when the photo is enlarged.

The Canvas Size command allows you to add space around an image, or to effectively crop an image. So, for example, let’s assume you want to print a photo at 11-inches by 17-inches, but on a 13-inch by 19-inch sheet of paper. This doesn’t actually require you to add canvas around the photo.

  1. If you print an image sized at 11×17 inches to a sheet of paper that is 13×19 inches, centering the printed image will automatically result in empty space around the photo.
  2. However, let’s assume you want to have a colored border around the outside of the image, to simulate an effect similar to matting the image.

You could use the Canvas Size command to add two inches to the width and height of the image, using an underlying color layer to apply the color to the “extra” space that is created around the photo. What all of this really means is that for most photographers with typical workflows, the Image Size command is the only command you need when you need to adjust the output size of a photo.

What is the image size for canvas?

‘To get a great-looking canvas when using a low-resolution photo, you should print it in either an 8′ x 8′ or 8′ x 12′ format. Simple as that.’ You might think that choosing a smaller size format will take something away from the quality, but nothing could be further from the truth.

What is the difference between image size, file size, and image quality? Article ID : 00010756 / Last Modified : 08/16/2015 Although these terms are related, they mean different things. The meaning of each is explained below. Image size: This represents the physical size and resolution of an image measured in pixels.

For example, A 10 megapixel (MP) camera may provide settings to take pictures in 10.2 MP (3872 x 2592), 5.6 MP (2896 x 1944), and 2.5 MP (1936 x 1296). A higher image size setting means a larger picture and bigger file size. A lower image size setting makes a smaller picture and smaller file size. Depending on your camera, there may be different sizes available.

File size: This is the amount of space that the image file takes up on your memory card, or internal memory if your camera has one. It is measured in megabytes. The actual file size depends on the image size and image quality settings selected on the camera.

Image quality: This dictates how much compression is used to record the file information. Some digital cameras have a where the Fine setting uses less compression than the Standard setting. Therefore, the detail of a picture taken with the Fine setting is a sharper than one taken with the Standard setting.

Similar to the image size setting discussed above, this also affects the file size. Since the Fine setting uses less compression and records more detail, the file size will be larger than one recorded with the standard setting. NOTE: Some high-end cameras also have a that provide even better image quality. : What is the difference between image size, file size, and image quality?

What is the shortcut to check the size of an image in Photoshop?

2. Image Size – The image size dialog box is used when you need to change the pixel dimensions, usually without changing the ratio or canvas size of your image. I use this to size down my images for a website or blog. You’ll find the Image Size dialogue box under Image in the menu, or use shortcut keys Command/Option/I to pull it up.

  • In the dialogue box, you can enter the desired dimensions for your image.
  • Be careful not to accidentally stretch your image here.
  • Click the chain link icon to maintain the proper ratio.
  • The best thing about the chain link is that it automatically does the math for you, so if you know the image needs to be 650 pixels wide, you can just enter that number and the computer will calculate the other dimension for you.

Yay for no math! Make sure you choose the proper unit of measure for your image. Pixels, inches, picas, etc.650 inches is definitely different than 650 pixels. I used to make this mistake a lot in the past if I was in a hurry, so I wanted to make sure to point it out to you.

  1. For the resampling box, I generally just choose Automatic.
  2. There are some preset options for you to use, depending on what you’re doing with the image.
  3. If you decide to make your images larger, keep in mind the computer will interpolate pixels for you and you might lose image quality.
  4. Depending on the final use of the image, that might not be a big deal.

Billboards and large-scale graphics which will be viewed from far away can have some pixelization without anyone noticing, but if you’re sizing up a tiny image you pulled from the internet to be used as a full page magazine spread, you’re probably out of luck (that’s violating copyright laws anyway.
