Julieanne Kost’s Blog | 8 Shortcuts for Working with Channels in Photoshop 1) Viewing Channels in Photoshop When working in RGB:

Command + 2 (Mac) | Control + 2 (Win) displays the Composite (RGB) Channel. Command + 3 (Mac) | Control + 3 (Win) displays the Red Channel. Command + 4 (Mac) | Control + 4 (Win) displays the Green Channel. Command + 5 (Mac) | Control + 5 (Win) displays the Blue Channel.

When working in CMYK:

Command + 2 (Mac) | Control + 2 (Win) displays the Composite (CMYK) Channel. Command + 3 (Mac) | Control + 3 (Win) displays the Cyan Channel. Command + 4 (Mac) | Control + 4 (Win) displays the Magenta Channel. Command + 5 (Mac) | Control + 5 (Win) displays the Yellow Channel. Command + 6 (Mac) | Control + 6 (Win) displays the Black Channel.

To revert back to the old behavior (PSCS3) select Window > Workspaces > Keyboard Shortcuts & Menus and enable “Use Legacy Channel Shortcuts”. This remaps the shortcuts for showing channels two keys to the left. For example:

Command + ~ (Mac) | Control + ~ (Win) displays the Composite Channel Command + 1 (Mac) | Control + 3 (Win) displays the first channel of the document

2) Viewing Channels in Panel Based Adjustments

Option + 2, 3, 4, etc. (Mac) | Alt + 2, 3, 4, etc. (Win) displays the Composite, Red, Green, and Blue channels when using the panel-based adjustments such as a Curves Adjustment layer.

The Hue/Saturation and Selective Color commands are slightly different as they don’t map to just RGB/CMYK, however the same general rules apply: Option + 2 (Mac) | Alt + 2(Win) selects the Master channel, and Opt+3, 4, etc. selects subsequent items in the list.

3) Saving Selections as Alpha Channels After making complex selections, choose Select > Save Selection to save the selection as an alpha channel. Alpha channels can be saved in several file formats including Photoshop and TIFF. (Note: alpha channels are not saved in the JPEG format.) 4) Loading Channels as Selections After saving selections as channels, those channels can be loaded back into a selection with the following shortcuts:

Command -click (Mac) | Control -click (Win) on the icon for a channel to load the channel as a selection. Command + Shift -click (Mac) | Control + Shift -click (Win) to add additional channels to the selection. Command + Option -click (Mac) | Control + Alt -click (Win) to subtract another channel from the selection. Command + Option + Shift-click (Mac) | Control + Alt + Shift -click (Win) to create the intersection of two channels.

5) Spot Color Channels in Photoshop Command -click (Mac) | Control -click (Win) the new channel icon on the Channels panel to create a new Spot Color channel. (Spot Color channels are used primarily for printing using additional “spot colors” on the printing press.)

6) Viewing Individual Channels 7) Display Channels in Color

During a Free Transform, using the Place command, and /or when Cropping, the opacity of layers as well as the visibility of individual channels can be changed on their respective panels (although not with the use of keyboard shortcuts). Note: this can be especially useful when using alpha channels and/or with alignment of layers. To display the Channels in the Channels panel in color, choose Preferences > Interface > and enable Show Channels in Color.8) Loading the Luminosity of an Image as a Selection Option + Command + 2 (Mac) | Alt + Control +2 (Win) loads the luminosity of an image as a selection. This can then be used for a variety of manipulations such as adjusting color or building density.,, : Julieanne Kost’s Blog | 8 Shortcuts for Working with Channels in Photoshop

Create a Batch To batch convert a folder of images, select ‘ File > Automate > Batch. ‘ and the following window opens. Choose the ‘ Convert RGB to CMYK ‘ action from the drop-down menu. Choose the source folder where your images are stored, then choose a destination folder where Photoshop will save the converted images. Or, if you’ve already packaged this job and can overwrite your files, you can select the same folder. Here is a little side note of what I do to save a step later. In my case, I have a catalog that resides on the web. The packaged folder contains a Links folder with the RGB images. I package my document again, this time adding ‘ Print ‘ to the folder name.

Now I have two packaged or collected folders that contain my files. This way, when I batch all of the images in the Links folder of the Print version, I can replace the images with the CMYK versions. When I open the file, I am asked, “Do you want to relink?” I answer, “Yes”. That way, all of the images are updated at once.

Now I have one catalog (and all of the supporting files) for the web and one for print.

Why convert RGB to CMYK?

Converting RGB to CMYK – The “shortcut” that many designers take when they have an RGB image that needs to be in CMYK is to toggle the Document Color Mode or Image Mode to CMYK Color. But not so fast. If your artwork was originally in RGB color mode, you may notice that the new CMYK values aren’t whole numbers.

  • This is because there’s a wider spectrum of options with RGB color, meaning when you convert to CMYK, there’s a chance your printed colors won’t exactly match your original intentions.
  • This is why some designers choose to design in CMYK: they can guarantee that the exact colors they’re using will be printable.

It’s a bit like translating from one spoken language to another; you can get the general meaning across, but the exact word-for-word translation often doesn’t correlate. Similarly, the translation of RGB colors on your screen into physical CMYK printing ink combinations that will print may be a “good enough” approximation but won’t be perfect.

Why convert from RGB to CMYK for print?

Is it CMYK or RGB for Print? For years, commercial printers have told graphic designers to convert RGB colors to CMYK before packaging your files to send to print. This is to make sure you can accurately see what the colors you are using will look like in print, since your computer monitor displays color in bright RGB while print uses CMYK.

This conversion is no longer required in all cases. No harm will be done if you stick to this old habit, but advances in printing workflows and growth in the use of commercial digital printing have eliminated it as a necessity. Some modern printing workflows even prefer files with RGB colors. RGB and CMYK are the color processes everyone is familiar with.

RGB is an additive process, meaning it adds red, green and blue together in varying amounts to produce other colors. CMYK is a subtractive process. Different amounts of cyan, magenta, yellow and black are used to “remove” reflected colors from paper to create other colors we can see.

The two processes have different ranges of color, with RGB providing a wider array of possibilities., like computer monitors, while printing uses CMYK. When RGB is converted to CMYK, colors can look muted. Designers were often disappointed when their printed piece looked different than what they had been seeing on screen.

To avoid this disappointment, printers told designers to convert colors to CMYK so they’d see them more accurately on their computer. Now, modern workflows allow printers to use color profiles that automatically match CMYK ink to RGB values to produce results that are much more similar.

  • Additionally, commercial digital printers can use inks beyond just CMYK to closely match the wider color gamut of RGB.
  • Designers actually gain some added benefits under this new approach.
  • RGB files tend to be smaller; it’s always easier to move and manipulate smaller files.
  • Since most designers today design for print and digital applications at the same time, keeping files in RGB gives you more flexibility as well.

If you’re not sure if you can to let go of this old habit, check with your printer. They’ll tell you whether their workflow still needs you to convert or not. : Is it CMYK or RGB for Print?

Is CMYK more accurate than RGB?

CMYK Colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black – The mixing of CMYK colors is a “SUBTRACTIVE PROCESS” that gives more accurate results than RGB. CMYK images are created by combining actual ink colors during the color printing process. In the print world the color process starts with “white.” Each layer of the 4 ink colors then serve to “reduce” the initial brightness in order to vary the hues and create the desired image.

What happens if I use RGB instead of CMYK?

Simply put, CMYK is the color mode intended for printing with ink, such as business card designs. RGB is the color mode intended for screen displays. The more color added in CMYK mode, the darker the result. The more color added to RGB, the lighter the result.

How do I not lose color from RGB to CMYK?

Not possible. CMYK colors is a subtractive combination of CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW, and BLACK, and RGB is an additive combination of RED, GREEN and BLUE. There are colors in CYMK colorspace that do not exist in RGB, and the other way around. Conversion either way will lose colors.

Why do CMYK color look dull in Photoshop?

Why Does CMYK Color Seem So Dull? How To Change To Cmyk In Photoshop CMYK is a color mode used by printers, standing for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key. Key is almost always Black, but in some specialized printers it may be another color. However, it will always come out more dull than what appears on screen, and programs don’t like to explain why.

  1. CMYK color appears dull because there are fewer colors possible than in RGB, which is what is shown on screen.
  2. It makes colors by mixing physical pigments together layering them one on top of another which makes them darker.
  3. Light will either be reflected or absorbed into the colors, unlike RGB which is made from light.

Printing in the wrong color mode can cause some drastic changes to the design and create subpar, disappointing results if not done correctly. Thankfully, it only takes a little bit of understanding on the difference between CMYK and RGB to get it right.
