Editing a Batch of Images in Photoshop Suppose you have 15 images you need to edit all in the same way. It would be tedious and time consuming for you to open and edit each image especially if the editing entails a lot of steps. Photoshop allows you record and save an action then apply this to a batch of images. Creating an image export action 1. Open up the Actions palette by clicking on the Window menu > Action, and create a new set by clicking on the folder icon at the bottom of the actions palette. Call it “Batch Actions.” 2. Then create a new Action by clicking on the new action icon at the bottom of the Action palette, and give it a descriptive name, for example, let’s call it “AutoContrast-Resize”. Your Action should now be recording, so anything you do from this point on will be included as an Action step. Do all the editing you want to record such as adjusting the contrast of the image, resizing it if you want all of the images to be of the same height or width, then save the changes. When you’re done, you’ll see this new command listed in the Actions palette. If you expand this command, you’ll see all of the settings you’ve applied editing that photo. After all the editing is complete, stop recording your Action by clicking on the stop icon on the Actions palette. Now you’re ready to batch process. Applying the Action to a batch Now apply this batch to a folder full of images. In this case, make sure all of the images you want to apply this action to are all contained in one folder. Here’s how that works.1. Choose File > Automate > Batch,2. At the top of the dialog that pops up, select your new Action from the list of available Actions.3. In the section below that, set the Source to ” Folder,” Click the “Choose ” button, and select the folder that contains the images you want to process for editing. Check the following options: * Suppress File open options dialogs * Suppress color profile warnings These will suppress warnings that would otherwise interrupt the batch process.4. In the section below that, set the Destination to ” None,” This will allow you to use the destinations that you recorded in your Action, so that the photos will be saved in the same folder. (If, in the future, you want your images exported to a single folder, you can set the destination to ” Folder,” then choose the destination folder on the fly in the Batch dialog.) In this example, I am editing a business card mock-up. The first step is to select your Smart Object from the layers panel. In this case, it’s a business card. With the Smart Object layer selected, click on Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents in the drop-down menu. This will open a new window in Photoshop displaying the contents of the smart object. You can also just double-click on the Smart Object’s layer thumbnail to open the Smart Object and edit the contents. Smart Object contents are shown in the Layers Panel After editing the smart object, you need to save your changes. You can do this by pressing File > Save, Keyboard shortcuts: You can use a keyboard shortcut to save changes made within a smart object too:

Going back to the main mockup document, your smart object will be updated with the changes you made. To continue editing the content of a Smart Object just follow the same steps and save your changes.

If you open multiple images at once, you’ll find you can easily copy and paste the adjustments from one image to another, this means you won’t have to edit each image individually. This is especially useful when working with multiple images shot around the same time, as these images will have few major differences in white balance and exposure. To copy the adjustments, first, open the raw images you’d like to edit in Photoshop. When you click Open in your file window, the Camera Raw window will open automatically. If the photo you’d like to use isn’t a raw file, Camera Raw won’t open on its own. In this case, you’ll have to head to Filter > Camera Raw Filter for the program to access the same adjustments, however, now editing the image as a compressed file (not raw). Once you apply the camera raw filter to the selected layer, the Camera Raw window will open. Edit one image the same way you’d like to copy and paste to other images. When you’re satisfied, make sure the photo is selected – with multiple photos open, the thumbnail of the selected photo will have a white border around it. Now, right-click or Command + click the selected image thumbnail and select Copy Edit Settings. You can also use Control + C (Win) or Command + C (Mac) to copy the settings. Next, right-click or Command + click another image thumbnail and select Paste Edit Settings, You can also use Control + V (Win) or Command + V (Mac) to paste the settings. You’ll notice the image and its thumbnail change to match the settings of the first image. To select multiple images at once, you can hold Control (Win) or Command (Mac) as you click the images you’d like to paste the settings to, before using Control + V (Win) or Command + V (Mac). If you’re only working with one image in Camera Raw, you can still copy the settings using any of the methods above. You’ll just have to open the image that you’d like to paste them to by heading to File > Open, Select and open the image you’d like, and again head to Filter > Camera Raw Filter, and when the Camera Raw window opens, you can right-click or Command + click the image and select Paste Edit Settings. You can also use Control + V (Win) or Command + V (Mac) to paste the settings onto the image. Once the edits are pasted, click OK to open the image.

PowerToys PowerRename – PowerRename can do even more. If you don’t already have PowerToys on your PC, download and install the PowerToysSetup.exe file from the program’s GitHub page (Opens in a new window), Open the PowerToys Settings window by double-clicking its System Tray icon, then selecting PowerRename, To receive suggestions for names when searching for and replacing existing filenames, confirm that Enable auto-complete for the search and replace fields is enabled. Use the field below to set the maximum number of suggestions you receive. If you’re unsure, leave the default value of 10. Now when you need to rename multiple files, open File Explorer and select the items you want to change. Right-click on the selection and choose PowerRename from the pop-up menu. In the right pane of PowerRename, confirm the files you wish to rename and make sure each one is checked. Check the box for Use regular expressions, You then need to set up your search and replace strings. For this, let’s use photos with the names of IMG_xxxx, with the xxxx representing a sequential number for each file. In the Search field, type IMG_, In PowerRename, the dot symbol is used as a variable representing a single character. So you would type four dots after the IMG_ as in IMG_. and leave the extension as is. In the Replace field, type the name you wish to give the files, such as New York Yankee Game, You then click the Enumerate Items button above the Apply button to add sequential numbers in parentheses to the end of the filename. This would look like New York Yankee Game (1), New York Yankee Game (2), and so on. But PowerToys really shines by incorporating variables. Maybe you want to indicate the date each photo was taken. Use the $ sign to add variables, the letter M for month, the letter D for the day, and the letter Y for the year. The number of times you use the letter determines the exact format. Let’s say you want to use the two-digit value for the month, the two-digit value for the date, and the four-digit value for the year. You would type the replace string as New York Yankee Game $MM-$DD-$YYYY. Note that all the changes you have made to this point have not been applied yet. PowerRename previews the new names in the Renamed column while the original filename is still shown under the Original column. This way you can see if your syntax is correct or the new naming convention works for your needs.

Actions that involve a unique identifier, such as setting a user’s proficiency level for a skill, should not be completed through bulk editing if each user requires separate settings. Some actions can only be completed at the individual item level. The Actions button only appears in CxEngage windows that allow for bulk editing.

How many pages can an editor edit in a day?
How long is a piece of string? It is difficult to say exactly how long it would take to edit a book, as it depends on various factors, but suffice to say, it is not as fast as some writers think. Most editors have had a client or two who thought their manuscript would be back within a week, and then balked when they found out how long it would take.
The most obvious factor in how long it takes to edit a book is how long the book is. A 95,000-word book will take a lot longer than a 40,000-word book. I usually allow about six weeks for a 95,000-word book, but it can vary. “Six weeks?” you might say. “I read books much faster than that.” Yes, but editing is not the same as skimming or reading a novel for enjoyment.
Why does it take so long? Editing is a thorough process – that is what you pay for and expect. An editor will go through the entire book at least twice, sometimes three or four times, looking at different things each time. During each pass, the editor is reading for detail and will be stopping to check facts, check grammar or spelling rules, or add items to a style sheet.
And they may also format the manuscript in a subsequent pass. And for each pass, the editor will be going very slowly. As soon as you speed things up, things can be missed – did you have to read the picture below twice? Another factor in the speed of editing are the different levels of editing, which all take different lengths of time.
There are general guidelines set out by the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) which suggest that for developmental editing an editor can do 1–5 standard pages an hour (where a standard page is always 250 words), heavy copy-editing can be done in 2–5 standard pages per hour, basic copy-editing in 5–10 standard pages per hour and proofreading in 9–13 pages per hour.
- That’s quite a range! A lot can depend on the actual manuscript and the editor carrying out the service.
- And these are only guidelines, which means that it may take longer still.
- A manuscript may not fall neatly into a category if it is overly technical, has more errors than average, or is written by a non-native speaker of English whose English is not at a native level.
In these cases, it may take longer. And the editor may work part-time or have more than one project on the go, meaning they have fewer hours in a week to work on a manuscript, resulting in more weeks required to complete the editing. However, even full-time editors usually do not work for more than 5 hours a day, as, due to the nature of the work and the concentration required, any longer can be harmful to health, or, at the least, it becomes more difficult to concentrate at the level required for more than 5 hours a day.
So, how long should I allow for editing? Your editor will give you a good estimate of the period they require to complete your manuscript. You should agree with them a firm deadline before commencing, so you both know when the manuscript will be completed. Many editors have a waiting list, so it pays to approach an editor in good time, regardless.
